HEREDITAS was founded in
1920 and has been published uninterrupted since.
As of 2005, the character of Hereditas changed,
from a traditional subscription based journal,
to become an open access, web based and author
funded journal. Hereditas publishes original
research and reviews from all sections of the
genetics discipline and welcomes theoretical
as well as empirical work.
Cytogenetics
Population genetics
Quantitative genetics
Theoretical genetics
Veterinary genetics

Clinical genetics
Molecular biology

Open access
Open access implies that everything published
in Hereditas is immediately available for downloading
and read for anyone with access to the internet,
at no costs. The copyright stays with the author.
Open access will increase the number of readers
and make the published results more widely
spread.
Web based
Web based means that there
will no longer be a printed version of Hereditas,
but the articles will only be accessible on
the internet through Wiley Interscience. Also articles published prior
to 2005 can be accessed via Internet on Synergy Wiley Interscience.
Copyright
Upon submission of an article to Hereditas,
authors must be aware the rights concerning
open access publishing. This permits any user
to download, print, extract, archive and distribute
the article, as long as appropriate credits
are given to the original source and to the
author(s) of the work. Upon publication, Hereditas
will be available to anyone through Synergy
with absolute open access. The transfer of
the publication fee too Hereditas is considered
as an approval from the authors of these rights.
Publication charge
The publication of articles in Hereditas is
funded by the authors, i. e. the author is
paying for the manuscript peer reviewing and
processing. Upon submission the author is charged
a submission fee that covers the handling of
the manuscripts prior to acceptance. Once the
manuscript is accepted for publication, the
author will be charged a publication fee covering
editing, typesetting etc. The publication charge
is set as low as possible for the benefit of
the authors. We are convinced that that this
is most important, since Hereditas have had
an increasing amount of papers from financially
less favoured regions of the world. Hereditas
is run by a non-profit foundation and as for
today, Hereditas cannot subsidise any publishing.
(See Guide for authors).
Editorial policy
The change in publication
practice does not mean any changes in the
editorial policy and peer-review process.
All manuscripts will be peer reviewed by
at least two referees. The Editorial Board
will guarantee a contstant high scientific
standard. In other words, it will thus not
be possible to “purchase
a place in the sun”. One thing will,
however, change. The handlingtime of manuscripts
will be reduced considerably. Hereditas guarantees
that from the editorial side, accepted manuscripts
will be published, i. e. available on the internet,
no more than three months following submission,
provided there are no lags from the author’s
side.
