The history of Web Ecology
The Board of the European Ecological Federation, in its work to establish contacts and cooperation between ecologists from all European countries, decided that one way would be to launch a wide coverage, easily accessible ecology journal. To enable ecologists from all over Europe to publish on its pages and to have access to all published material, it was decided to start an electronic journal which would be free of charge during an initial period. Negotiations with EEF members led to an Editorial Office being established in Thessaloniki, Greece, with the technical part of the office being linked to Oikos' Editorial Office in Lund, Sweden. Thus, existing editorial experience could be utilized at low cost. The final launching of the journal was made possible by financial support from the publisher of Oikos, Ecography and J. Avian Biol. A firm footing for the initial period was thus ensured, also by associating with existing ecology journals. In November 2005 the EEF Board decided to restructure the Journal and appointed a new Editorial Board, aiming at establishing the Journal as a main reference in the field of Ecology. |
